Description

This project examines the relationship between socioeconomic inequality and the development and the impact of hearing impairment on the lives of older adults in Australia in terms of mental well-being, quality of life, social engagement, and economic position.

Previous work has demonstrated that hearing impairment is associated with social isolation, depression, disability, and low quality of life. But most of this work is based on a cross-sectional analysis of the correlates of hearing impairment and in studies outside of Australia.

Australia has an internationally unique blended model of hearing health care including both socially subsidized hearing health care and private health care at different ages and for different levels of hearing loss. This project will explore the causes and consequences of hearing impairment using longitudinal data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey.

The project will inform strategies to minimize socioeconomic risks for hearing impairment and access to hearing health services and hearing aid use in order to mitigate the adverse effects of hearing impairment in older adults in Australia.
