Water Purification Characteristics of Chitosan

ABSTRACT Alum (potassium aluminum sulfate-K+Al3+ (SO42-) 2), ferrous sulfate (Fe2+ SO42-), ferric chloride (Fe2+2Cl-) and ferric chloro-sulfate (Fe2+Cl-SO42-) were commonly used as coagulants. However, a possible link of Alzheimer’s disease with conventional aluminum based coagulants and other adverse bioaccumulation cases associated with heavy metal have become an issue in wastewater treatment. Hence, special attention has shift towards using biodegradable polymer like chitosan in treatmen...

Corrosion Inhibition of Aluminum in Acidic Medium by Bamboo Leaves Extract

ABSTRACT  The inhibitive effects of bamboo leaves extracts (BLE) on the corrosion of aluminum in 1M HCl were studied using weight loss, adsorption, thermodynamics and kinetic studies. The phytochemical constituents of the BLE were tannins, polyphenols, flavonols, terpenoids, sterols and alkaloids. BLE was noted to contain more of the polyphenols and terpenoids which were largely responsible for the inhibitive action of the extracts. Results obtained from the experiments carried out at 303K a...

Impact of Torre faction on the Fuel Properties of Lignite, Coconut Shells, Cassava Peels and Their Blends

ABSTRACT The effect of torrefaction temperature and residence time on the fuel properties of lignite, biomass (coconut shells and cassava peels) and their blends was investigated. The samples were subjected to three torrecfaction temperatures (200, 260 and 300o C) and at two residence times (10 and 20 minutes) using programmable muffle furnace. Blends of torrefied lignite and biomass were prepared in two different ratios (80:20 and 70:30). The energy content, proximate and ultimate analyses o...

Quality Characteristics of Underground Water Resources in Nkanu East and Nkanu West Local Government Areas of Enugu State, Nigeria.

ABSTRACT Physicochemical and bacteriological analyses of underground water resources in Nkanu East and Nkanu West Local Government Areas of Enugu state, Nigeria were carried out to evaluate the potability and quality of the rural water supplies and to provide baseline data for future quality assessment. Underground water samples were collected from ten different boreholes in Nkanu East and Nkanu West LGAs. The parameters measured include temperature, colour, pH, electrical conductivity, turbi...

Spectrophotometric Determination of Vanadium(Iii) And Vanadium(V) Using 2-[(E)-[3-[(E)-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)Methyleneamino] Phenyl]Iminomethyl]Phenol

ABSTRACT 2-[(E)-[3-[(E)-(2-hydroxyphenyl)methyleneamino]phenyl]iminomethyl]phenol was synthesized from the condensation reaction of 1,3-diaminobenzene and 2-hydroxyzaldehyde in dimethylformaldehyde (DMF). Its coordination characteristic with vanadium(III) and vanadium(V) complexes was studied via, UV/Visible, IR and NMR spectroscopy; stoichiometric, melting point and conductivity determinations. The analytical data of these complexes and the mode of bonding show that, the ligand acted as a te...

Evaluation of the Quality Assurance of Five Brands Amoxicillin Trihydrate Capsules Sold in the Open Drug Market at Nsukka

ABSTRACT The active drug content and weight uniformity of five brands (A – E) of Amoxicillin Trihydrate capsules in Nsukka open drug market were evaluated to ascertain their quality assurance using UV visible spectroscopy and gravimetry. This study has shown that all the brands analyzed showed significant variations with respect to active drug content determination for the three brands B, D and E. Using United State Pharmacopoeia (USP) and British Pharmacopoeia (BP) specifications of 90 –...

The Effects of the Binary and Ternary Combinations of Pine Needle (Pinus Pinaster ) Dust and Bambara Nut (Vigna Subterranea ) Chaff with Sub-Bituminous Coal Dust for Briquette Production

ABSTRACT This work studied the effect of the binary and ternary combinations of pine needle (Pinus pinaster ) dust and bambara nut (Vigna subterranea) chaff with coal dust for briquette production. Briquettes of 100% of the pure coal and the biomass were produced first. The ratios for the blending were as follows 1:1 for the binary combination of each biomass with coal and with themselves, and 1:1:1 for the ternary combination of the two biomass with coal. The feed stocks were dried to a mois...

Modification of Coconut Shell Activated Carbon with an Azo Ligand: 1, 2– Dihydro-1, 5- Dimethyl-2 Phenyl-4- (E)– (2,3,4- Trihydrophenyl)-3h-Pyrazol-3-One (Ddptp) And Its Potentials for the Re

ABSTRACT Modification of coconut (Cocos nucicera L.) shell activated carbon with an Azo ligand: 1, 2– dihydro-1,5-dimethyl-2-phenyl-4-(E)–(2,3,4-trihydrophenyl)-3H-pyrazol-3-one (DDPTP) and its potentials for the removal of Cd2+, Pb2+ and Ni2+ from polluted water samples were studied. It was activated chemically using CaCO3 as the activating agent. Proximate analysis on the coconut shell showed 8.7 % moisture content, 10.4 % volatile matter, 3.2 % ash content and 77.7 % fixed carbon. The ...

Tandem Amination Catalysis in the Synthesis of Diazaphenoxazine Compounds of Pharmaceutical Interest

ABSTRACT The synthesis and characterization of five new linear diazaphenoxazine compounds is reported. The key intermediate, 3-chloro-1-9-diazaphenoxazine, was prepared via a base catalyzed reaction of 2-amino-3-hydroxypyridine with 2,3,5-trichloropyridine in aqueous 1, 4-dioxane. Five 3-amino derivatives of the key intermediate were prepared via Buchwald – Hartwigamination coupling reaction between 3-chloro-1,9-diazaphenoxazine and various heterocyclic amines, under the catalytic influence...

Tandem Amidation Catalysis in the Synthesis of Diazaphenoxazine Carboxamides of Pharmaceutical Interest

ABSTRACT Tandem amidation catalyzed synthesis of linear diazaphenoxazine carboxamide derivatives is reported. This was achieved by the reaction of 2-amino-3-hydroxypyridine and 2,3,5-trichloropyridine in aqueous basic medium which gave 3-chloro-1,9-diazaphenoxazine as white solid crystals. 3-Chloro-1,9-diazaphenoxazine was then subjected to Buchwald-Hartwig amidation coupling reaction with various amides namely formamide, phthalamide, 4- nitrobenzamide, benzamide and acetamide via water promo...

ORGANOCHLORINE PESTICIDES RESIDUE IN COCOA BEANS (Theobroma cacao) AND SOILS OF COCOA PLANTATIONS IN ONDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT The study investigated the levels of organochlorine pesticide residues in both cocoa beans and soils of cocoa plantations in selected farms in Ondo State. Soil samples and cocoa pods were collected from four major farms in the State. The pesticide residues were extracted, cleaned up and analysed using Gas Chromatography-Electron Capture Detector (GC-ECD). In the analysed cocoa samples, the ranges of the mean concentrations of the organochlorine pesticides were: α-HCH (ND-0.094 m...
