Specificities of Antibodies to Plasmodium falciparum Merozoite Sur face Protein (MSP)-119

ABSTRACT In a survey of children living in South Western Nigeria . plasma levels of a nti -MSP119 antibodies were not associated with patent parasitemia. Anti -MSP1 ,9 antibody titres correlated positively with age, indicating that development of antibodies to MSP1'9 may depend on long -term exposure to parasites.

Serum ferritin levels in children with malaria anaemia in Ibadan

ABSTRACT This study assessed the serum ferritin levels in plasma samples from children (4 – 74 months old) admitted for malaria at the Adeoyo Maternity Hospital (Beere) Ibadan, Oyo State, using a sandwich-ELISA. These values were compared with malaria parasitemia, MSP-1 antibody titre and packed cell volume values previously obtained through standard methods. Statistical analyses were carried out using SPSS, Excel and Epi-Calc software. Results showed that the serum ferritin level in the po...

SOIL FAECAL POLLUTION AND THE RISK OF HOOKWORM INFECTION IN AREAS OF IBADAN, NIGERIA.

ABSTRACT Soil samples were randomly collected from 25 different observed and suspected human communal defecation locations within Ibadan. All the soil types encountered namely, sand, sandy loam, Sandy, clay loamy, and loamy sand enhanced hookworm larval propagation. The organic matter content showed a decrease with depth. The surface layer soil samples supported hookworm larval growth while the sub soil layer with the same amount of organic matter content as the surface soil layers showed a n...

EPIDEMIOLOGY OF MALARIA IN CHILDREN LIVING AT IGBO-ORA, SOUTH WESTERN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT Malaria transmission is seasonal with higher transmission occurring in the rainy season. The burden of malaria falls mainly on children and causes anaemia and fever. Children of school going age are affected and this leads to absence from school. Blood samples were collected from children aged 10 days to 15 years in dry and rainy seasons. Parasite densities were determined by microscopy. Malaria prevalence was higher in the rainy season than in the dry season. In the dry season, 42.4...

Clinical malaria diagnosis in adults: the value of signs, symptoms and antibodies

ABSTRACT In the absence of microscopic examination, the high prevalence of asymptomatic malaria infections and the non-specific symptoms of the disease make clinical diagnosis difficult in highly endemic areas. Data from daily medical records 0f 111 adult volunteers obtained in a 13-month longitudinal survey were analysed using Pearson's correlation to investigate the relationship between parasitaernia and clinical symptoms and to determine the predictive strength of various clinical symptoms...

Studies on the lifecycle of Aleurodicus dispersus (Rusell) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) on potted cassava plant in a screen house

ABSTRACT The life cycle, and morphometries studies of A. dispersus (Rusell), white flies were conducted in a screen house in the Department of Zoology, University of Ibadan, Ibadan. The study revealed that A. dispersus (Rusell) on cassava potted plants leaves, Manihot esculenta (Cranzt) (TMS 91934), have six stages, which include, egg first instar, second instar, third instar, pupa and adult. Trichoderma lignorum a fungal was identified as the cause of high mortality rate which occurred on t...

NUTRITIONAL ANAEMIA AND MALARIA IN PRESCHOOL AND SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN

Abstract Background: The most common cause of anemia is a deficiency of iron; but it may also be caused by deficiencies of folates, vitamin B12 and protein. Some anemias are not caused by nutritional factors, but by congenital factors and parasitic diseases such as malaria. This study attempted to estimate the prevalence of anemia among pre-school and school- aged children in two rural areas of Odogbolu Local government area, and to determine whether its cause was nutritional or could be att...

Effects of short term laboratory infestation of dried cassava variety TME-7 by Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae)

ABSTRACT Researches have shown that dried cassava varieties are relatively susceptible to Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) infestation. Laboratory studies were conducted to determine weight loss and nutritional status of dried cassava chips (TME-7) and P. truncatus emergence rate over an infestation period of 8 weeks. TME-7 mean weight loss (±SD) rose to 11.30% ± 4.01 (22.67%) with P. truncatus mean emergence rate (± SD) of 18.50 ± 8.25; 16.33 ± 6.85 and 9.93 ± 3.30 for larvae, pupae and a...
