The Development Of A Laboratory Fire-Tube Steam Boiler -

ABSTRACT

Steam boiler is a closed vessel which is used to produce steam from water by combustion of fuel. Steam is important in engineering and energy studies. It is use to sterilize laboratory equipment, for heating applications and also used to generate power. A laboratory fire-tube boiler was design and constructed from a conceptual physical geometry, making necessary design calculations from which dimensions and other deductions were made, and finally developing a working drawing. A burner is used to produce heat, which heat up the water in the drum. Increase in the temperature of the water, generate steam in the boiler. The fire tube concept with a burner was used for the development of the boiler. The material used was cut into various sizes and diameters in order to fabricate the boiler. The boiler is made of four sections which are the reservoir, water drum, steam drum and burner. Water flows into the water drum (heating section) and it heated to a desired temperature and pressure. The steam generated flows into the steam section. After the construction, the efficiency of the boiler was tested and found to be 78.5%. From the result obtained, it shows that the boiler can be used effectively for practicals.
