A Phonological Analysis of Selected Songs of Olamide

ABSTRACT

This study examined the phonological analysis of some selected songs of Olamide. It specifically determine the influence of popular music on the use of English language among Nigerian youths; ascertain the channels of exposure of Popular music among Nigerian youths and examine the lyrics and elements of some selected songs of Olamide

A content analysis research design method was employed to quantify and analyze the rhymes, alliteration, consonant, repetition and others in the selected songs of Olamide. The researched analyze some selected songs of olamide (gaza, jinja, story for the gods and others) it was revealed that there is alliteration, repetition, wordplay and others.

Based on the phonological analysis of Olamide's lyrics, it was discussed that he utilizes a variety of phonetic features and techniques to create his unique style of music. He often incorporates elements of Yoruba language and culture, which adds to the richness and authenticity of his songs. Olamide's lyrics are characterized by a strong rhythmic pattern and a distinct use of rhyme and alliteration. He frequently employs repetition and wordplay to create catchy hooks and memorable lines.

In conclusion, a comprehensive phonological analysis of Olamide's songs in the context of Nigerian English reveals a fascinating interplay of linguistic elements. Olamide's pronunciation patterns exhibit a dynamic fusion of standard Nigerian English with the rhythmic and tonal influences derived from the rich tapestry of local languages, particularly Yoruba. The pronounced intonation and rhythm in his delivery add a distinctive flavor to his lyrical expressions, capturing the essence of the linguistic diversity present in Nigeria. Furthermore, the artist's deliberate incorporation of local slang and creative wordplay showcases a nuanced understanding of linguistic versatility.
