An Appraisal Of Senior Staff Training And Development Scheme In Federal College Of Education (Technical) Potiskum

ABSTRACT

The basic aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the Senior staff

training and development programme of the Federal College of Education

(Technical) Potiskum, Yobe State with a view to assessing the extent to which the

College had been able to achieve its manpower needs. The research also evaluated

the extent to which the senior staff training and development programme of the

College had returned values to the College in terms of increased productivity,

heightened morale, and greater organizational stability; and appraised the problems

militating against staff development policies of the College and offered suggestions

on how to improve on them. Three hypotheses were formulated to direct the thesis,

while 200 questionnaires were administered on senior staff of the College. In the

same vein, some Establishment staff were interviewed. Records on personnel were

consulted and analyzed. Primary and secondary sources of data were used, and

simple percentage tables was used to analyze the data. The study revealed that there

was positive correlation between staff staying in the College and possibility for

further studies, and that the best method for the College to retain its staff and

ameliorate staff problems were through staff training and development. Based on

the findings above, some recommendations were suggested not only to enable the

College maintain its staff to ensure organizational stability, but also to improve on

the Conditions of Service to bring it to par with that of Universities so that staff

could not be easily poached.
