An Assessment Of The Livelihood Strategy Of The Aged People In Zanzibar: A Case Study Of Kendwa Fishing Community

ABSTRACT

Due to changing of demographic, economic, political and environmental the livelihood strategies developed by aged people deserve particular attention. Lack of government support and decreasing extension family has meant that older people are increasingly expected to find their own means of support into old age to develop their own strategies and rely on their own resources. A sample size of 65 (sixty five) respondents among the population of elderly persons in fishing community was employed, and two active selected Organizations that support older people are used. This study uses an explorative approach to understand various livelihood strategies of the elderly in Kendwa fishing community. The study used in-depth interviews as data collection tool. Through the livelihoods framework the research analyzes the various impacts affecting the attainment of sustainable livelihood outcomes of elderly in Kendwa fishing communities. The finding shows that, there is many challenges face older people who reside in Kendwa fishing community, some of them are, poverty, lack of capital, poor fishing tools and diseases. Also the study reveals that there are no any existing livelihood strategies taken to improve the lives of older people in Kendwa fishing community. In addition to that, the research finds that, community and families are the main institutions that help and support older people.
