An Assessment Of Women Access To Land Ownership For Poverty Reduction In Tanzania: A Case Study Of Bahi District In Dodoma Region

ABSTRACT

The study is about assessment of women access to land ownership for poverty reduction in Bahi District, Dodoma Region. The main objectives of the study were to examine the prevailing status of women access to land in Bahi District Council, to scrutinize the effects of women access to land ownership on poverty reduction in the study area, to identify the factors affecting women access to land ownership in the study area and to document the community suggestions on how to improve women access to land in Bahi District. The study was a descriptive designed and a sample of 114 respondents was used and these were randomly obtained from Bahi District. The methods used in data collection were interviews, questionnaire, documentary review and focus group discussion. The statistical package for social science (SPSS) was used for management of data and analysis. Data was subjected to frequency counts involving simple percentages and content analysis techniques using themes and comments from questionnaires and interview. This was to address the three research objectives formulated to guide the study. The study has used a cross-section survey design and the study was entirely qualitative. Data were collected by using interviews, questionnaire survey and documentary review. From the findings it was found out that more than half (58%) of the respondents strongly agreed that women who freely own land produce more than women who do not. This study concludes that, it had been realized that there is positive effects on poverty reduction among women if women were accessed to land ownership. This would make them independent in terms of income generation and hence support their family and the community at large. The study recommends that the government and other leaders should make sure that laws and policy for women empowerment must be strengthened.
