Assessment Of The Contribution Of Local Government Authorities In The Provision Of Education On Solid Waste Management: A Case Study Of Dodoma Municipal Council

ABSTRACT

This Study assessed the contribution of local government authorities in the provision

of education on solid waste management. Viwandani ward and Majengo ward of

Dodoma Municipal Council were taken as a Case Study. The objectives of the study

were: to determine the contribution of Dodoma Municipal Council in the provision

of education on solid waste management, to examine the means used by the Dodoma

Municipal Council in educating the public on solid waste management, to identify

challenges facing Dodoma Municipal Council in providing education on solid waste

management, and to identify measures used by Dodoma Municipal Council to

address challenges in provision of education on solid waste management. The total

sample size was 115 respondents. The study used primary and secondary data which

were collected through questionnaire, interview and documentary review. In general,

the study found that the contribution of Dodoma Municipal Council in the provision

of education on solid waste management is moderate. The study found a number of

shortfall including; lack of disposal equipment, poor disposal method, lack of

awareness of laws and policies on solid waste management, the careless behavior of

the household members is another major challenge for controlling solid waste at the

household level, cost sharing revealed as a challenge hindering households to

facilitate the collection of the solid waste in their area. Despite of the challenges, this

study recommends that education and awareness campaigns on solid waste

management need to be intensified and promoted at all levels of actors in the SWM

system.

Solid waste management training aids, solid waste management experts, regular

training schedule and enough budgets; is better to be adhered to enhance the

provision of education on solid waste management. Moreover corporate spirit

among all SWM Stake holders is Vital.
