Assessment Of The Effectiveness Of Ward Community Police On Crime Prevention In Tanzania: A Case Of Rufiji District

ABSTRACT

This study is about an Assessment of the Effectiveness of Ward Community Police on crime prevention in Tanzania. This was necessitated by an increased fear of crime, social and physical disorder, neighborhood decay within the community, therefore, the police had to change into new strategy known as community policing. Data were collected through structured and unstructured questionnaire, observation, documentary review and questionnaire. These were analysed using Scientific Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20 whereby 100 participants of difference sex were involved in providing information. The major findings were corruptions, brutality and lack of confidentiality as contributors to the poor reputation of Tanzania Police Force. Other issues detected include the police being accused as among the criminals and are the most leading corrupt in the country. Besides the ward community police are perceived to be a failure in the delivery of security services to the people at the ward level. Moreover other findings show that, the police living and working conditions is enormous and risky. The study therefore recommends that, the police officers can only perform their duties efficiently and effectively if they are supported by the conditions of their service. This could entail the fact that, police should be entitled to reasonable pay, housing, medical treatment and retirement benefits, commensurate with the risks inherent in their jobs.Other recommendation is for the Tanzania police force should change his name to be Tanzania Police Service.
