Corruption in Nigeria and the Role of Efcc in Combating Crime (1999-2010).

ABSTRACT The incidence of corruption is said to be institutionalized in Nigeria’s chequered history. This stems from the realities that since gaining independence in 1960, corruption has remained an incurable disease in the nation’s polity as successive administrations in the country had been found wanting in this area. The problem of Nigeria is simply a failure of leadership. The political elite seem to have lost their bearing in qualitative leadership for a nation deeply entrenched in corrupt practices like Nigeria. To this effect, it is obvious that our enemies are the political profiteers, the swindlers, the men in high and low places that demand for bribes and 10 percent of contract awards. They are those that corrupt our society and put the country back by their words and actions. Consequently, this work will attempt to take a holistic analysis of these danger and the corruption scourge in our society. The paper will examine corruption in our national life, its inherent dangers to both our national and international image, assess the efforts by different administration in the country to combat it. It will focus essentially on the role of Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) under the Obasanjo and Yar’Adua administration to control or simply put fight corruption in Nigeria.
