Cultural Practices And Girl Child Education In Kagamba Sub-County Rakai District, Uganda

ABSTRACT

The study was concerned to inquire into cultural practices and girl child education in Kagamba ub County, Rakai district. The study was guided by the general objective: To establish the ripact of cultural practices that limit girl child education out of the general objective, specific bjectives were formulated that is, how cultural practices hinder the girl child education and to nd out solutions to the challenges caused by cultural practices in the attainment of girl child clucation. This study employed both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The researcher sed purposive sampling and only questionnaires were used as data collection instruments. )uantitative data were analyzed using frequency and percentage tables. The study findings was lat early marriage, child labor, boy child preference, sexual exploitation were the major cultural ractices hindering girl child education leading to poor academic performance, spread of [TV/AIDS, poor standards of living and low incomes among these affected girls. The study ndings on the possible solutions to promote girl child education were that although laws against iild marriage and other hindrances exist in the district, the implementation and enforcement of ich laws is often weak. The study concluded that there are still cultural practices that lead to ~or academic performance among girls leading to school dropout of girls in the district that teds special attention from nongovernmental organizations, government and individual efforts uphold the rights of girls in the district. Basing on the findings of the study, the researcher ~commended for provision of technical assistance, providing economic incentives for delayed Lamage, need to provide constitutional measures to uphold the rights of women and girls, such equality, non-discrimination and protection from violence, are critical and can shape the sponse of governments to eliminating female genital mutilation and inclusion of leaders, both ligious and secular, in interventions is important to secure a supportive environment for change.
