Dearth of Construction Craftmen in Southwestern Nigeria; from the Architect Perspective

Several studies on construction craft skills have identified a number of problems including ineffective training as responsible for shortages of craftsmen in the construction industry. In Nigeria, the problem of shortages of craftsmen has been considered to be a multifaceted issue. This research therefore examined dearth of construction craft in south-western Nigeria. Largely, qualitative approach was adopted in conducting the research. Detailed literature review on shortages of craftsmen led to the development of a semi-structured interview guide which was used in conducting interviews in technical training institutions and construction organisations. In the technical institutions, senior management staff that specialised in technical training was interviewed while in the construction organisations, both principal officer and craftsmen were administered questionnaire. A total of 3 Academic institutions were identified which has a reputable school of environmental studies and 2 technical colleges. For the construction organisations, six (6) large architectural firm, engineering firm, construction firms, Estate valuers and quantity surveying experts each were targeted in each study area using purposive sampling and interviews. Data obtained from the interviews were subjected to descriptive analysis.
