DESIGNING OF A WIND TURBINE USING WIND ENERGY POTENTIAL, A CASE OF FUTA

In this study of designing a wind turbine using wind energy potential, a case of FUTA. Weibull distribution function method was adopt with the help of probability density function and cumulative density function analysis, the wind speed characteristics and energy potential of the study area was investigated using hourly wind speed data that span between 1 and 12 months (1year) and measured at a height of 10 m. Hellmann power law was used to derive the wind characteristics of the study area to 20m, 30m, 40m, 50m, and 60m heights respectively. The data was analyzed and plotted using R-studio and Microsoft Excel. It was shown that the monthly mean wind speed at the 10m height original data collected are 1.8m/s, 1.13m/s, 1.12m/s, 1.3m/s, 1.47m/s, 1.49m/s, 1.79m/s, 1.80m/s, 1.44m/s, 1.40m/s, 1.58m/s, respectively. The type of wind turbine that can work perfectly in the study area was determined which is “AVANTIS-927”. According to this research the performance of this selected wind turbine models on monthly basis would be able to produce rated power between (3Kw to 50Kw) at a varying height, i.e. depending on the height of the tower because the higher the turbine tower the more efficient the turbine to produce power.
