EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT REVENUE GENERATING EFFORTS AND THE PERFORMANCE OF UNIVERSITIES IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Considering the invaluable roles and contributions of education to the economic development of a nation, funding of education to enhance meaningful, social and national development should be a national concern. This paper attempts to examine the managerial efforts and efficiency performance of revenue generation efforts of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) by highlighting some of the problems facing funding education in Nigeria’s Higher Institutions. To achieve the objectives, the paper uses performing monitoring research and causal-comparative research design to explore opinions on the managerial and efficiency performance of FUNAAB Revenue Generating Units (RGUs). Using simple random sampling technique, 87 respondents was drawn from a population of 129. Data was collected using a questionnaire. Data collected were statistically treated using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) in order to determine the performance levels of the FUNAAB RGUs. The study illustrates how the recent developments in efficiency analysis and statistical inference can be applied when evaluating the effectiveness of revenue generation to supplement higher institutions funding. The results reveal the existence of misallocation of resources and/or inefficient application of RGUs policy development, it also provides FUNAAB with an overall understanding of their revenue generation and identifies Revenue Generating Units that are working well and not so well.
