Effects Of Teaching Learning Resources On Chemistry Performance At "0" Level. Case Study Of Bumuli Division, Bungoma District, Kenya

ABSTRACT

This case study was an investigation into the effects of teaching learning resources on chemistry performance at "0" level. The general aim of the study was to find out the impact of teaching learning resources on performance of chemistry in "0" Level. The objectives of the study were to find out the teaching learning resources for chemistry, to determine the effects of lack of teaching learning resources on chemist!)' performance, to find out the attitude of students towards chemist!)', to find out ways and methods of improving the teaching and study of chemist!)' and finally role of government as pertains teaching learning resources of chemist!)'. The research was carried out in private and public secondal)' schools of Bumula Division, Bungoma District. The study mainly focused on "0" Level students especially from form two to form four who take chemist!)'. The schools under the study were Khoasoko S.S, Mwiruti S.S, Bumula secondal)' school, Bulimbo secondal)' school, Nasyanda S.S and Mateka S.S. these schools have been in place since 1984. The researcher used a cross sectional descriptive survey designed with both qualitative and quantitative methods. The research used a sample size of six schools out of fifteen schools in the constituency. From these schools, 180 respondents were selected out 620 of the total population. Subjects of the study were selected using simple random sampling. The methods of Data collection which the researcher used involved questionnaires both for teachers and students. the findings of the study in line with the objectives were as follows; majority of the schools visited lacked physical resources as the major teaching learning resources for chemist!)', poor performance was found out to be major effect of T.L.R, most students had negative attitudes towards chemistry and group methods and motivation were suggested as best methods and ways of improving teaching and study of chemistry. The conclusion based on findings was that teaching learning resources like physical, human and economic all affect the performance of chemist!)'. The researcher met the recommendation below arising from the findings; teachers to Val)' the methods of teaching, government to provide funds, train more science teachers and enroll students on merit.
