ELECTRICAL POWER GENERATING SYSTEMS CONSIDERING RENEWABLE AND NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES NIGERIA AS A CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT

This report brings to the fore, The Renewable Energy Sources presently accessible to the human species, and the feasibility of harnessing these energy sources in Nigeria. Since the dawn of the 21st Century, Global Warming, Carbon Emission Reductions and Renewable Energy Sources have all been major topics of discussion, permeating into the facets of every socio-economic and political forum such as, Davos Economic Forum, G7 and G20 Conventions, and has spawned specific platforms for discussion such as the annual Climate Conference. Countless goals have been set in such congregations, but very few of these goals have been achieved due to varying reasons. This report gives an analytical breakdown of the possibilities, and hence, incorporation of Renewable Energy Generating Systems into the National Power Grid.Energy availability and sustainability is a fundamental step to achieving economic and social stability in a developing economy.  In this study, the potentials of renewable energy for sustainable energy generation in developing economies (Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroon) have been discussed. The peculiarities of each country in terms of the numerous issues involved in harnessing renewable energy were highlighted. These are West and Central African countries, located in the tropics with huge amount of insolation which if carefully tapped will generate enough energy for herselves and for export. The study also explores the potentials of other renewables (wind and biomass), and compares the paradoxes of oil-rich Nigeria and the stark reality of a near-total decay of social infrastructure and economic focus to the other developing economies. The study then proposes a road map that Nigeria and by extension any developing country could adopt for a sustainable energy future. The Renewable Energy Sources presently accessible to the human species, and the feasibility of harnessing these energy sources in Nigeria.
