Factors Contributing To School Dropout Ra Te On Prij\1ary School Girls In Ma Tisi Location. Central Division Of Trans-Nzoia District Kenya

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors that contributed to girls' dropout in

primary schools in Matisi location. Specific objectives of the study were to: To determine

girls enrolment in primary schools in Matisi location, to establish the factors that contribute

to girl's dropout in Matisi location, to establish methods of overcoming girl's dropout rate in

Matisi location, to examine the role of the Ministry of Education in curtailing primary school

girls dropout in primary schools of Matisi location. The methods for data collection were

questionnaires to the teachers and pupils. The study employed survey design to collect

information from teachers and primary school girls in Matisi location. The sample was made

of 20 people where 3 were teachers and 17 were pupils. The researcher used questionnaires

to collect data which were described using frequency tables and accompanied by statistics.

The study established that out of the number of teachers in Matisi location only ten percent

are female teachers, the Ministers of Education in his speech that although there were various

factors affecting the marginalized and vulnerable groups, there was need for further research

to identify the contributing factors to girls' dropout and address them, the impact of HIV

/ AIDS on girls' was high in lower primary as compared to upper primary, The study

concluded that the respondents suggest that government needs to put more emphasis on the

girls education to help address problem of girls in schools. Awareness and sensitization

campaign needs to be carried out to enlighten parents on the importance of girls' education

and do away with the culture that views girls and women as beasts of burden. They should be

seen as people who can contribute positively to the economy of a place by taking them to

school without discrimination, primary school teachers should be trained in guidance and

counseling to be able to address different issues that affect girls in primary schools, girls

should be involved in extra-curricula activities to make them enjoy learning and make it part

of them and own it. In so doing the cases of dropout will be minimized. This should include

involving them in chair, sports and athletics, parents and teachers should collaborate andvnetwork together to help address problems that girls encounter both at home and at school.
