ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to examine factors that influenced the exposure of casual workers to hazards at construction sites in Kintampo, This study adopted a descriptive survey design with a sample of 100 selected through the stratified random sampling technique. Primary source of data was obtained through the administration of questionnaires to the respondents. Percentages, correlation and multiple regression techniques of data analysis were employed through the latest version of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) at α=5% or absolute t ≥2 in the case of the t-test. The study found out that, ergonomic, chemical, biological, work organisation, physical and safety factors were the critical factors that significantly influenced the exposure of casual workers to hazards at the construction sites. Also, the study discovered that, occupational health surveillance, health and safety audits, health and safety inspections, health and safety training, employee wellness and assistance programmes, health and safety committees and health and safety policies were the occupational health and safety practices that significantly minimized the rate of workers‘ exposure to hazards at the construction sites. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended among others that, there should be constant provision of safety measures and materials in places of work especially where chemicals and other dangerous substances are handled. Also, as a precautionary measure, organisations need to arrange and undertake periodic inspections of safety equipment and machinery and should ensure compliance to safety rules by employees. Further, adequate training should be given to workers in order to reduce or prevent industrial accidents. Additionally, workers should take adequate and proper precautions to safeguard against the life threats that are part and parcel of the professions. Also, there should be effective recording system on issues relating to health, safety and other related matters at the work place with a view to minimizing health problems.
