ANALYSIS OF THE NUTRITIONAL VALUES OF FEED COMPOUNDED FROM LOCALLY AVAILABLE MATERIALS

ABSTRACTThis project details the results of a research work carried out to develop fish feed compounded from locally available materials in the institute of oceanography fish farm and analyzed its nutritional values, in the biochemistry department all in the University of Calabar. On the basis of the feed production, it is recommended that the feeding regime of the animal (fish) for intended culture is known, a dry diet formulation of two distinct feed lines was produced (fingerlings and adul...

PROXIMATE AND MINERAL COMPOSITIONS OF THE EDIBLE PORTION OF MACROBRACHIUM MACROBRACHION FROM COASTAL WATERS OF ONDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACTThis study, proximate and mineral compositions of Macrobrachium macrobrachion, was conducted to evaluate the nutritive quality of the prawn. Thirteen samples of Macrobrachium macrobrachion were procured from prawn mongers at Igbokoda in Ondo State, and were identified using Identification sheet by FAO and Powell. Prawn samples were prepared for analysis: smoke-dried, separated into whole body, flesh (edible portion) and waste, and weighed. The flesh were ground into fine powder ...

Survival and Growth Rate of Clarias gariepinus Larvae Fed with Artemia salina and Inert Diet.

This project work was basically conducted to provide fish farmers a preferable diet for Catfish fry.. Several diets were used while the fish growth rate amongst other parameters were observed Abstract The growth and survival of Clarias gariepinus larvae (0.42mg) fed Artemia salina (D1), inert diet (egg white + fish meal) (D2) and a combination of both diets (D3) was investigated for 42 days. Each diet was feed to 80 post yolk-sac fry,  in  triplicate  plastic  ta...

ASSESSMENT OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND ECOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES OF OYAN AND OPEJI LAKES, OGUN STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACTThe study was carried out on the socio-economic and ecological activities of the fishers in Oyan and Opeji Lakes in Ogun State. The management practices and laws used on the water body and also the fishing activities of the fishers were also investigated. Majority of the fishers in Oyan and Opeji were males, 80% and 86.6% respectively. The study revealed that about 100% of the fishers were aware of the law governing the water bodies. Moreover, majority of challenges faced by the fishe...

CHARACTERIZATION OF GENETIC STRAINS IN CLARIID SPECIES, Clarias gariepinus AND Heterobranchus bidorsalis USING MICROSATELLITE MARKERS

ABSTRACTThis study examined the population structure and genetic distance between two Clariid species, Clarias gariepinus and Heterobranchus bidorsalis using microsatellite markers. Genetic strains of 20 domesticated samples of both species were characterized with four microsatellite markers. 95% of the samples amplified upon PCR amplification and 44.3% of the total alleles observed for all the loci were heterozygote. Analysis showed that all the four loci were polymorphic for all the samples...

MORPHOMETRIC AND MERISTICS CHARACTERISTICS OF Erpetoichthys calabaricus FROM WETLAND OF OGUN WATER-SIDE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

ABSTRACTA study was conducted to assess the meristic and morphorlogical features, variation in strain and the length-weight relationship of 60 fish samples of Erpetoichthys calabaricus inhabiting the wetland of Ogun waterside Local Government area, Ogun state, Nigeria. Fish samples were collected with artisanal gears (bamboo traps) during January and February, 2011. Twenty four of the samples were female while thirty six were male. The estimated b value (allometry coefficient) of the equation...

THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF SMALL SCALE FISH FARMING ENTERPRISE IN LAGOS STATE FISH FARM ESTATE, IKORODU, NIGERIA

ABSTRACTThis study was conducted to evaluate the socio-economic analysis of small scale fish farming enterprise of the Lagos state fish farming estate in Ikorodu, Nigeria. The primary data were obtained from 60 respondents with structured interview guides, which were selected using simple sampling techniques. The results reveals that the majority (88.3%) of the fish farmers are male while (31.40%) are in the active age distribution of 31-40 years, university education (63.0%) and (58.3%) were...
