Form And Style In The Nigerian Novel

ABSTRACT

In the relatively short period (1952–1978) of 1to 1140 so far, the Nigerian novel has displayed a remarkable growth in which various forms and techniques have been exploited. The cost significant stimulus for this rapid growth had been the novelists' Interest in the portrayal of the realities of contemporary Nigerian world and experiences, and by the faithful representation of these aspects, to correct the prejudices which generations of Europeans have created about the black san, and his culture. In doing this coot of the novelists have Ironically drawn upon the pro-established western fictional forms and the English language. In their use of these forms, however, the Nigerian novelists have not been merely initative. Rather, starting with the example of the western forms they have gone to the new grounds" by utilising themes of specifically African experiences and culture, and by exploiting new narrative and linguistic modes based upon African oral literary forms of expression. Indeed, in their use of the western fictional nodes, the novelists have been particularly conscious of the need to Africaniso the forms and styles which they have inherited.
