Gen Z's Exposure-Utility Dilemma Towards National Progress: Examining the Zimbabwean Development Trajectory (2023-2025)

This dissertation explores the dynamics of Generation Z’s exposure-utility dilemma concerning national progress in Zimbabwe, a nation marked by complex socio-economic predicaments and tumultuous political landscape. Despite being the most connected generation through digital platforms, education, recent studies suggest that Gen Z exhibits a notable disengagement and reluctance towards national issues which poses important implications for the country’s development trajectory. This research aims to bridge the existing scholarly gap by critically examining the factors contributing to this cohort’s perceived ignorance and apathy towards pressing national matters. Through the employment of mixed-methods, the study gathers insights from a diverse sample of Zimbabwean Gen Z individuals. The research identifies key barriers to engagement, including socio-economic disparities, educational shortcomings and a persuasive sense of disillusionment with political processes. It also analyses how the digital landscape both facilitates and hinders meaningful participation in national discourse, thereby influencing the cohort’s sense of utility in engaging with developmental issues. The findings reveal a complex interplay between exposure to information, resources, opportunities and perceived utility of engagement, highlighting a paradox where increased access to information via digital platforms and other sources does not necessarily translate into active participation and awareness. The research underscores the critical role of education and civic engagement initiatives in fostering a more informed and proactive generation. This dissertation contributes to the understanding of generational attitudes towards national progress in Zimbabwe and also offers recommendations for leveraging Gen z’s potential as vital agents of change. Therefore, by addressing the underlying barriers to engagement, this study will advocate for a reimagined approach to national development that includes the voices and perspectives of younger generations.
