ABSTRACT
The research work examined education and social mobility among the residents in Surulere Local Government Area, Lagos. Four Research questions and four Research hypotheses guided the study. To achieve this, a non-experimental research design of cross sectional survey method was adopted. The simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample of 200 residents from the age of 30 and above. The descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentage were used to analyze the demographic data while inferential statistics of Chi-square(x2) was used in testing the research hypotheses. Research findings showed that education influence social mobility. From the tested hypothesis it was found that there is a significant relationship between education and horizontal mobility among the respondents in Surulere Local Government Area, Lagos, there is a significant relationship between the education and career mobility among the respondents in Surulere Local Government Area, Lagos, there is a relationship between education and vertical mobility among the respondents in Surulere Local Government Area, Lagos and there is a relationship between education and intergenerational mobility among the respondents in Surulere Local Government Area, Lagos. The study therefore shows that education plays a very important role in social mobility and often determines a number of life chances, subsequent income, social status and proffers some recommendations towards improving education and social mobility in the Nigerian economy.
