"Refugees Crisis In The Great Lakes Region; An Analysis Of Article 33 Of The 1951 Geneva Convention On The Status Of Refugees," Case Study On The South Sudanese Refugees In Uganda

ABSTRACT The crisis of multitudes of people fleeing their homes/ countries, occasioned by a number of reasons including conflict, famine, discrimination, persecution, and natural calamities to mention but a few, ' is one that the world has suffered with and continued to attempt to find definitive resolve thereto since humankind merged into organized communities 1. In an attempt to find a solution to the persistent refugee crisis several international, regional and municipal laws have been enacted by various states with an aim to better manage the situation2. This research; "Refugees Crisis in the Great Lakes Region; an analysis of Article 33 of the 1951 Geneva Convention on the Status of Refugees," was carried out with the aim of analyzing the applicability of the various International treaties Uganda is signatory to and municipal law in the effective humanitarian management of refugees flocking into the country, especially the applicability of Article 33(1) and (2) of the Geneva Convention of 1951 on the Status of Refugees. This study was also conducted on the South Sudanese refugees in Uganda. It aimed at tracing the history of refugees from South Sudan to Uganda. However, the main objective and purpose of this research is to critically examine article 33 of the 1951 Geneva Convention on the status of refugees, with special regard to the non refoulement principle and exceptions thereto.
