RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HEADTEACHERS’ AND ASSISTANT HEADTEACHERS’ INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP AND STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN PUBLIC JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS IN KWADASO SUB-METROPOLIS, KUMASI.

ABSTRACT

The study sought to ascertain the relationship between headteachers’ and assistant headteachers’ instructional leadership roles and students’ academic achievement in public junior high schools in the Kwadaso sub-metropolis,Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The study used quantitative methods to gather data by administering two sets of questionnaire to headteachers, assistant headteachers and students. Simple random sampling and purposive sampling techniques were used to select 375 respondents comprising 15 headteachers, 15 assistant headteachers and 345 students from 15 public junior high schools. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics and correlation. The findings from the study showed that headteachers and assistant headteachers in public junior high schools in the study area practiced three common leadership styles; authoritative, democratic and laissez-faire. In the course of their instructional duties, the leadership styles identified were also interchanged to match the academic achievement situation headteachers perceived in the study area. The study also revealed that headteachers and assistant headteachers perceived instructional leadership as curriculum and instructional management, and promoting positive atmosphere for students learning. Finally, it was found that both students’ perception about instructional leadership and headteachers’ perception about instructional leadership were positively related to academic achievement of schools in the Kwadaso submetropolis. The study recommends that both students’ perception about instructional leadership and headteachers perception about instructional leadership should be used to assess academic achievement, especially in underperforming schools.
