Repositioning Of Women For Effective Participation In Politics: A Study Of South- East Geo- Political Zone Of Nigeria

ABSTRACT

The thrust of this study was the examination of the relevance ways of

repositioning women for effective participation in politics. Women political

participation is an issue of great importance. Women have been relegated to

background politically for years. The paper point out the detrimental effects, which

low participation of women, had on social, economic, political and cultural

development of Nigeria. These had necessitated the reason why United Nation

declared a decade for women in 1975 and other subsequent conferences on

women, which were held in the following places Benjing in 1995, Kenya in 1985

and Denmark 1980 and others. However, idea does not approximate reality.

Today, the need to reposition women has become a matter of necessity as the

above effect has not yielded a commensurate impart in National development.

It is against the above backdrop that makes this study imperative. The study

was conducted into five chapters. Chapter one deals with the introduction,

statement of problem, significant of study, scope and limitation of study, the

existing literature on the topic was reviewed in the second chapter, it also involved

hypothesis and theoretical framework; in chapter three, research design, method

of data collection, method of data presentation and analysis were discussed. In

chapter four, data collection from the fieldwork were presented and analyzed. The

researcher generally summarized the issues on the topic and proffer solutions on

the identified problems, which involves constitutional arrangement, which adopt

shade of proportional representation; increase of educational opportunities for

women, strategic campaign messages and more economic opportunities that can

place women in equal part with those of men.
