SOC 101: Introduction to Sociology

TEACHING PHYLOSOPHY This class adopts constructive teaching and learning method. In constructivist learning, students are active learners and are strongly encouraged to participate optimally in every class activities. I believe that students have ability to learn by getting new insight into subject matters under discussion. My role as the course instructor is to provide support, motivate and direct students on how to acquire knowledge. In order for us to have a successful and engaging learning environment, I believe that we all need to be on the same page on what is expected of me as your instructor and what is expected of you as students.

IS EXPECTED OF ME AS YOUR INSTRUCTOR On my part, my aim is to ensure that you learn and succeed in this class, therefore, I have taken time to prepare and structure this course in order to facilitate optimum learning. I ensure that I return all your works to you promptly and respond to your questions on time. I am available to render help to you should you require it. (Check: “how to reach me” on eLMS). I cherish honesty, integrity, fairness and mutual respect.

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF YOU AS THE STUDENT On your part as students, you should be looking at what is due for each week (check: weekly announcement and assignments) and plan your work load accordingly. You are required to read weekly topics ahead prior to class and submit a summary of your reading. Weekly classes are meant to discuss what you have read individually and answer questions that arise during your reading. You are also required to make entries into your reflexive journal weekly. This can only be done after you have read and understood topics that are given weekly. All due dates are to be strictly complied with. Lateness for submission of summary of reading, assignments and projects are strongly advised against. Ensure to be available for all classes, as class attendance attracts grades. I strongly encourage quality works from you. In other words, your participation, discussion, assignment and projects should depict that you have read and studied the required text. Cheating and plagiarism of any kind will not be tolerated at all. Your work should be originally yours except during group work or in collaboration with other students. Every students are expected to comport themselves respectfully towards me and other students.
