Somali Civil War and Socio-Economic Development in Mogadishu

ABSTRACT Somali socioeconomics has shockingly been affected by the civil war in Somalia; civil war has destroyed almost every determinant of the socioeconomics, and made it obsolete. The objectives of the research included to determine the root causes of Somali civil war, to analyze the effects of the civil war on the socioeconomics of the country and to find out the level of the socioeconomic of and recommend some suggestions that would improve the current level of socioeconomics. Somalia has been in a war about two decades and it declined the social economics of the country; civil war also caused anarchy to Somalia that the country became one of the poorest and most corrupted countries around the worldS The researcher’s objectives include to know the effects of civil war on the socioeconomics of the country, to know the level of socioeconomics of Somalia and to find out the negative effects of civil war. The research has been conducted in the capital city of Mogadishu, where the civil war affected, 108 respondents have been selected as sample size, from target population of 150 the researcher used quantitative method, questionnaire was the instrument used to collect data, and ethical issues were conducted. Tables were used to analyze data, and correlation of the variables has been indicated. The major findings of the research include; causes of Somali civil war have been identified as poor politics, tribalism, foreign intervention, illiteracy and corruption, the civil war has caused to anarchy, poor infrastructure, political instability, warlordism, and spread of poverty, spread of Internal Displacement of People or IDP5, hostility among society, destruction of agriculture resources, lack of production and lack of security. Recommendations made based on the findings and research objective which include creating community mobilization, reduction of community illiteracy, seeking international support to peace building and develop socioeconomics of the country, finding ways to overcome corruption, and involvement of women in the peace and reconciliation process in the country.
