Stress Management Strategies Among Female Heads In Basic Schools In Cape Coast Metropolis

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study wus to investigate the sourees. manifestations. nnd

coping strategies of stress mnong female hends in bnsic schools in the Cape Const

Metropolis. Furthennore. the study sought to lind out whether there were indicators

of stress mnong femnle hends when perfonning their multiple mlcs.

The theoreticnl review centred on the importanec of educntion. lcmlcrship

roles of female heads of bnsie schools. women in thc workforce and as Iemlers. thc

concept of stress. nnd coping strategics which involved construetivc nnd counter

productive coping strategies.

The study was a descriptive research. Forty (40) Icmnle heads of basic

schools in the Cnpe Canst rvletropolis wcre involvcd in thc study. The

questionnnire wns the mnin instrument used in the collection ordata for the stndy.

The mnjor finding of the study wns that there existed difrerenees in sources

and manifestntions of stress nmong femnle bnsie school hends in terms orindienlors.

coping strategies, ndopted by these Icmnle heads. 11 wns found thnl nH~iorily or the

femnle school heads adopted constructive coping stl'lltegies in denting with stress.

Reconllnendations were oflcred in relntion to the means of helping reduce

stress levels nmong female bnsie school heads. Pertinent mnong these were

delegation of duties to subordinates, good planning of school nnd home nclivities.
