The Causes Of Learners Poor Performance In Science Subject In Selected Primary Schools Of Tulimani Division, Mbooni- West District Kenya

ABSTRACT

This study examined the factors causing poor students performance in science

subjects in selected secondary schools of Tulimani division, Mbooni-West district.

The following objectives guided the study; To find out if the physical facilities

available in schools contributed to performance in science; To assess the attitude

of learners towards sciences; To assess the teachers attitude towards subject.

Findings indicate that majority of the science teachers were male, eight of the

fifteen teachers are graduate teachers and seven of them were diploma holders.

The academic qualification of most of the science teachers was favorably high

enough to enable them teach authoritatively and confidently to make the

students pass the subject. Further finding indicate that all schools provided

relevant science textbooks and charts. Eleven teachers had further contributed

that in their laboratories there were chemicals for conducting experiment. But

when it came to funding of science congress and fairs as well as field trips the

number of teachers reduced. Recommendations were also made.
