The Fishery Resources Management And Its Impact On People’s Livelihoods: A Case Of Ukerewe Islands In Lake Victoria, Tanzania

ABSTRACT

This research has aimed at examining the fishery resources management and its impact on people‟s livelihoods in Ukerewe district. The general objective was to examine the nature of fishery resources management and its impact on people‟s livelihood in Ukerewe island. The study employed descriptive survey design method using qualitative and quantitative investigations. Data were collected through Interviews and survey methods, whereby interview guide and questionnaire were used to solaced information from fishing communities especially the fishermen such as the fish trader, fish producer and the fish processor. Also, the district administrators were involved and data were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. Sampling for obtaining villages and respondents involved strata, purposive and random sampling techniques. The study found that two management practices are undertaken, Such as, planning and controlling to ensure sustainable fishing. Fishing community was involved appropriate but not compromise the interest of both the fishery resources and the economics of the fishing community. Also there exists confusion of who is a supreme controller of the fishery resources activities. The confusion could lead into failure to manage the fish resources and balance the practices to ensure the fishing community economic objectives are not negatively affected.

The study recommends that Government should improve communication system in the local Government organisations, national policy and promote people‟s participation in performing their duties especially on fishing industry
