The History Of Democracy from Ancient Athens to Present day

Democracy is one of the most successful political systems of the 20th and 21st centuries. In a democrat government people have rights to chosen the religion of their choices; because democracy gives an opportunities to have equal rights before the law. When democracy was invented, the system was referred to as Demokrita, which connotes rule by the people. Schumpeter (1947) opined that “democracy means only that the people have the opportunity of accepting or rejecting the men who are to govern them."(Schumpeter, 1947, 2).

By this, it implies conducting elections and choosing leaders that will depict the majority. However, in the words of Abraham Lincoln democracy is “a government of the people, by the people and for the people” (Abraham Lincoln 1862). Generally, Democracy was introduced into the Athenian city-state with the restructuring of Cleisthenes in years 508-7 BC, embracing and encompassing its prominence. At the same time, “Pericles was a leading political figure from between 461 to 429, before being suppressed briefly in the wake of the defeat of Athens by the Oligarchic city –state Sparta In the Peloponnesian War in 404” ( Roper, Brian S,2012, 1).Democracy has not been successfully implemented in the world
