ABSTRACT

This study investigated the impact of motivation on the performance of Community

secondary school teachers in Mufindi district. Specifically, the study sought to find

out whether motivation of teachers had any effect on their morale to perform work

and; the effects of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on the performance of teachers.

A cross sectional survey design approach was adopted for the study with both

qualitative and quantitative approaches. A total sample of 99 respondents including

teachers, head teachers, District Education Officer and secretary of teachers Union

(TTU) were consulted. Data were collected through semi structured interviews,

questionnaires, observation and documentary review.

The study reveals that, motivation packages to teachers in community based

secondary schools were inadequate. This was evident in the non-availability of

residential accommodation, lack of extra allowance inadequate salary and poor

recognition and respect from the community as well lack of enough resources to

ensure incentives to teachers,

In order to improve teacher’s motivation and performance, the study recommended

increase in the salary of secondary school teachers to match the increased cost of

living, there should be provision of accommodation to teachers, and extra allowances

to attribute good performance among teachers. The study concluded that in order to

improve the quality of secondary education and teacher effectiveness in Tanzania,

motivation is not an option, but rather a central issue that needs to be prioritized.
