ABSTRACT 

The study aimed at identifying the influence of cultural practices on the promotion of the rights of women in Kambuga sub-county, Kanungu district. This was after the realization of the cultural practices in Kambuga sub-county in Kanungu district. The study specifically sought to achieve : to establish the forms of cultural practices on the promotion rights of women in Kambuga sub-county, Kanungu district, to examine the effects of cultural practices on the promotion of women’s rights and to identify possible solutions to eliminating cultural practices that violates the rights of women in Kambuga sub-county ,Kanungu district respectively. To achieve the stated objectives, the study was guided by the following objectives: what are the forms of cultural practices on promotion of women’s rights? What are the effects of cultural practices on the promotion of women rights? What are the possible solutions to eliminating cultural practices that violates the women rights in Kambuga sub-county Kanungu district? The study design took the form of descriptive research design, the study also involved purposive sampling in which the data was sought qualitative and quantitative. Sample of 127 respondents was selected for the study. The sample included adolescents and women who were in the categories of single, married and divorced in the age bracket of 18-50 and above Soyears. The data was collected using interviews, questionnaires and focus group discussions for primary data and document analysis for secondary data. The study found out that the forms of cultural practices in Kambuga sub-county Kanungu district included aspects such as female genital mutilation, early marriages, boy child preference. The study revealed the effects of cultural practices which included discrimination against women, harmful traditional practices violence against women and bias against women and traditions and typical mindset of the society against women. Furthermore the study revealed that there were possible solutions to eliminate cultural practices which included increasing female education, xi community advocacy to change people’s orientation and perception about harmful cultural practices meted on women, changing societal misconception about women through media intervention, improving the health of women through integrated expanded services. The study concludes by noting that there is scanty data about the influence of cultural practices in Kambuga sub-county, Kanungu district that is readily available. This was due to limited research and statistics that measure the forms and effects of cultural practices on the promotion of women rights. This remains a case until the all those concerned work together to help improve women’s rights in developmental issues. The study recommends constitutional recognition of the rights of girls and women, moving towards gender equality to marriage and to promote education, this is because if women are educated they contribute to nation building.
