The Relationship between Parenting Styles Used Early in Life on Employees and Current Employee Performance at Sarova Panafric Hotel, Kenya

Abstract:

Family is the basic unit of society. Many values are passed down through the type of parenting an individual receives. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the parenting style used in an employee's early life and their current performance at work. The study's objectives were to determine parenting styles used early in life on employees at Sarova Panafric Hotel, to measure the performance of employees in Sarova Panafric Hotel and to determine differences in parenting styles used early in life and current employee performance at the workplace. The study used the correlational design and utilized two instruments to collect data; the Baumrind Parenting Style Questionnaire to collect information on the parenting style used in the early years of the employee and the 360-degree feedback form to collect information on employee performance. The sample was 90 employees (41 male and 49 female). The results showed that the parenting style used in the early life of the respondents were Authoritative parents 36% (M=3.631, SD= 0.55) authoritarian parents are 28.8% (M=3.498, SD=0.447), and permissive parents are 16.2% (M=2.918, SD= 0. 951.The results of employee performance at Sarova Panafric showed that customer focus (M=4.679, SD=0.153), continuous improvement (M=4.00, SD=0.13), Communication (M=3.95, SD= 0.23) team working (M=3.89, SD=0.085) problem solving and decision making (M=3.817, SD=0.2) organization and time management (M=3 .49,5D=0.21) interpersonal skills (M= 3.22, SD= 0.18) and motivation (M=3.084, SD= 0.111). An ANOVA analysis shows that the parenting style used early in life significantly affects one's current performance (F (2,87) =6.249, p=.003). Based on the findings of this study, the researcher recommended the need for increased awareness of parenting style and its influence on employees' lives. The awareness would help to demystify the notion that parenting style does not affect employee performance.
