The Socio-Scientific Causes of Malnutrition Among Children of 1-10 Years: Case Study of Kibuli Division in Kampala District

ABSTRACT The study on the "Socio-Scientific Causes of Malnutrition among Children of 1-10 Years" was carried out in Kibuli in Kampala District with specific objectives of; finding out the socio-scientific factors leading to malnutrition and solutions to the problems faced among these children. A review of related literature was carried out on existing information on the specific variables of this paper to comprehend the problem, enrich and supplement the study findings. The study was of a qualitative design which used questionnaires and interviews administered on a sample of 1 00 respondents, including mothers, local leaders, social workers and medical personnel. The study established that, the socio-scientific factors causing malnutrition included; lack of balanced diet, high birth rates, high food prices, constant disease and malarial attacks, food insecurities, hunger as well as poor crop yield. The impact of malnutrition included; stunted growth, maladjusted behaviors, deteriorating state of health, exposes them to mortality as well as leading to miserable lives whereas solutions to address this were suggested as; provision of supplements, training on nutritional care, provision of startup support, improving research and reducing stress of the children. The study concluded that, for a child not to be malnourished, it should be adequately fed and resources need to be available to provide for a child's nutritional requirements, otherwise without this the health of children will always be undermined. The study recommends the following that there is need to; build and sustaining viable human; introducing a new model with significant strategic state intervention; state and non-state actors to extend a helping hand in transformational changes; promote family planning transfer cash to support the vulnerable; protect against land conversion and introducing NEP AD to help in feeding program designing.
