ChAPTER ONE 1.0 Introduction Electronic systems are groupings of electronic circuits and components which are designed to accomplish one or more complex functions. Examples include telecommunication svstcms. computer systems, power distribution systems, radar systems, electronic music systems, and many others. Suzan Clamp & Justin Keen (2005) I3illing Systems arc systems that are used to track statements of charges for goods supplied or services rendered in business enterprises. Billing systems are used to prepare summary inRwmation of the amount of business done in a specific period (Mulligan 2002). Descriptions of electronic data sources have varied greatly. and numerous terms have been used inconsistently across studies. In most studies, investigators did not provide sufficient information to allow distinctions in terminology. Thus, the EMR listed in each stud~ represented a provider-created electronic record of patient care. Other forms of’ electronic health data that represented subsets of data used for research, such as surveillance databases or data registries, were not considered EMRs as they were not used by health care providers for patient care.
