An Assessment Of Women's Autonomy By Fertility Behaviour In Northern Nigeria

ABSTRACT

The study examined women's autonomy by fertility behaviour in northern Nigeria using Nigeria

Demographic and Health Survey women recode dataset. Analyses were done at three levels,

univariate level by means of frequency distribution, bivariate level by using Chi-square test and

multivariate level by the use of multinomial logistic regression models. Findings revealed that

7.1 % of women enjoyed autonomy. In all, 63. 7% of women were working and there was a

significance relationship between women's autonomy and fertility behaviour (X2= 163.29,

P=0.0000) women with low autonomy (87.1 %) indicated they wanted more children compared to

women with high autonomy (12.9%). In addition, a significant relationship was also observed

between ethnicity and fertility behaviour (X2 = 417.84, P=0.0000). Multivariate analysis revealed the influence of women's autonomy (OR=l.69, P
