An Evaluation Of The Locations Of Intercity Luxurious Bus Terminals In Metropolitan Lagos

ABSTRACT

This study attempts an empirical evaluation of the location of inter city luxurious bus terminals in Metropolitan Lagos. The impacts of these locations in the areas of delays, congestion and pollution were the main foci of this work. Logistic S-shaped curve was used to evaluate the growth pattern of the luxurious bus firms in Metropolitan Lagos. The delays at the terminals were evaluated through direct measurement from the field. The Post-Hoc Test and Least Significance Difference were applied to determine the variations in the contributions to delay by different streams vehicle. Noise meter was used to measure the noise levels around the terminals.

The results show that firstly, pattern of growth of the luxurious passenger bus firms did not follow the logistic (S-shaped) curve which tries to show the usual three phases of growth the period of early growth, followed by period of rapid growth and final phase of slow growth. Secondly, the existing terminals show clustering which was calculated using point on a fine analysis. Thirdly, the socio-economic characteristics of all the major zones and the pull-factors that were investigated show that the variables responsible for the existence of terminals in the areas identified are markets, residences, and accessibility. Fourthly, the identified contribution of the luxurious bus terminals to delays in relation to other vehicles using post hoc test is different from that caused by other vehicles. Using a noise meter, the average noise levels around the terminals range between 70-980B in the morning, 75-90dB in the afternoon and 95-98dB in the evening.
