ABSTRACT
Nigeria is experiencing technical economic recession which has led to mass unemployment. As such, this study was conducted to assess the batik technique and how it can be applied in the process of bag making as a means of self sustenance. Batik which is regarded as a versatile medium for artists offers immense possibilities as the patterns are applied by actual drawing rather than by weaving with thread to create colourful and more elaborate designs with complex images. This has accorded batik the right to become a material for fashion as seen on shirts, dresses, belts and even shoes and also in interior decoration. In the area of bags, polychromatic hues with complex motifs and designs formed on clothing materials can be applied or sewn on leather to be used for the production of bags. The objective is to increase patronage, promote use of batik technique/products, entrepreneurship, increase export as well as human capital development. The experimental research method is employed and the entire effort is to promote entrepreneurship and encourage small medium scale/cottage industry.
