BUSINESS EDUCATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY AND MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to determine how business education could be an indispensable tool for achieving millennium development goals (MDGs) in this 21st century. The paper takes a critical look at the concepts of business education and MDGs in Nigeria.   The paper stresses the fact that the roadmap to global prosperity championed by united nation development programmes which were known many years back MDGs to adapt present reality threat of extinction occasioned by rapid degradation of natural resources, environmental pollution,  and climate change.  If this, is  to make any ripple effect in the space of  time then it must be propagation using  the right channel or tool, that is, education. Education, especially the type that leads to a vocational and skill acquisition and self-reliance has been from the beginning of time the ideal, if not the only tool for national development, economic enlightenment and self-reliance and citizenship empowerment.  Hence, this paper reveals the impact of business education in MDGs principles, goals and strategies. In addition, the paper brings to the limelight, various veritable tools needed for MDGs. Conclusively; the paper also identified challenges encountered by business education in Nigeria. This paper recommended various strategies to make business education as a veritable tool for sustaining MDGs. It suggests entrepreneurial and functional business education for all stakeholders in higher institutions irrespective of career aspirations.
