Community Related Factors and the Development of Education Curriculum in Kampala District, Uganda

ABSTRACT The research was conducted under the topic: Community Related Factors and the Development of Education Curriculum in Kampala district. The major question which the researcher attempted to answer was: “Could the community be taken as a laboratory for the development of the education curriculum?” The methodology the researcher used in answering this question was a description of the community’s upheld values and needs and how all education stakeholders can work together to develop education curriculum (descriptive survey design). The data obtained was subjected to a strict scrutiny using data tabulation technique based on closed-ended questionnaire survey attempting to predict, find cause-and effect and the influence which community related factors can make to the development of education curriculum. The findings indicated that a good working relationship between all education stakeholders could result into a wonderful education curriculum and that if education curriculum is not based on community needs, it would be anaemic and unreal. The researcher concluded that curriculum developers should study the communities, find out their real problems, the resources endowed with the communities, the labour market requirements and then develop a more relevant education curriculum based on community needs and curriculum reviews be based on an informed mind about the community needs. The researcher recommended that education curriculum development should be based on what goes on in communities. Communities are formed by human beings whose life styles constantly change and this means that communities’ expectations too change constantly and rapidly calling for an equal rapid response of change in the education curriculum.
