Constraints To Rural Household Savings A Case Study Of Kajiado District

ABSTRACT

A research study on the constraints to rural household's savings was carried out in the

rural areas ofKajiado districts.

The main objective was to identify and explain the constraints to rural household savings in Kajiado districts. The study also specifically aimed at identifying the informal forms of savings used by the rural people of Kajiado district, the problems associated with the forms of informal savings used and also to identify the level of awareness of the importance of household savings to a household or community.

Data was collected by use of questionnaires and interviews from a sample of 200 respondents who were randomly selected. Most of the respondents were in the age group of20-30years of age. Most of the respondents saved their incomes in form of animals while the least saved in

forms of land.All respondents agreed that it was beneficial to have adequate house hold savings and most of them agreed to these since they thought it was beneficial to have adequate house hold savings to reduce the incidence or vulnerability of crop failures. Some of the constraints to rural house hold savings which were noted from the study included the lack of infrastructure, unemployment and the lack of credit.

The study also recommended an improvement in livestock keeping as one of the ways to decrease the decrease the constraints to rural savings in Kajiado district.
