ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to identify the strength and weakness of respondents in terms of cultural practices and inter tribal conflicts, to disprove or prove the theory under which the study was underpinned, to test the null hypothesis of no significant relationship between cultural practices and inter-tribal conflicts and to identify existing gaps and contribute to existing knowledge by filling the gaps identified. The study was guided by four specific objectives which include) to identify the demographic characteristics of the respondents in terms of: Gender, Age and Educational level, (ii) to determine the types of cultural practices in Jonglei state south Sudan, (iii) to determine the causes of inter-tribal conflicts in Jonglei state south Sudan and iv) to establish the significant relationship between the types of cultural practices and inter-tribal conflicts in Jonglei state south Sudan. The study employed descriptive correlation design that uses both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection in its methodology and a sample size of 200 respondents out of 512 participated in the study. From the study findings it was indicated that majority of respondents were male (56%), between 20-24 years of age (32.5%) and majority of these were Diploma holders (31.5%). the average mean (mean=2.90), implying a high contribution towards cultural practice. The level of intertribal conflicts was found to be high on average (mean=2.71). Finally, there was a positive significant relationship between the extent of cultural practices and level of intertribal conflicts. The study recommends that there is need to sensitize the populace in southern Sudan and Jogolei state in particular of modern and international acceptable cultural practices that foster unity and mutual understanding among all people. Government of South Sudan should fight against forced sexual activities, abduction and slavery existing among communities of Jonglei state and make gender issues like gender main streaming a cross cutting issue to all organizations and department.
