Does Hopelessness, Emotional Regulation, Resilience, And Social Support Play a Role in Young Adults' Deliberate Self-Harm?

In this thesis, deliberate self-harm (DSH) is defined as the deliberate, culturally undesirable, self-performed, instantaneous, and direct destruction of physical tissue that is lowlethal and free of overdose, self-poisoning, or suicidal intent. DSH is a major mental health condition that affects young people all over the world (Hawton et al., 2006; De Leo & Heller, 2004), and it is linked to a number of negative psychological and social consequences (DOnofrio, 2007; Hawton et al., 2006). This thesis utilized young adults, individuals with a history of selfharm (N=45) and individuals without a history of self-harm (N=45), to assess factors like Hopelessness, Emotional Regulation, Resilience and Social Support. The above-mentioned scales were administered to a total of 90 people aged 18 to 30. The mean difference of the variables was calculated using independent sample t-test through SPSS v26 and Jamovi Project v2.3 software. The results suggested that there were significant differences in areas of Hopelessness, Resilience, Expressive Suppression in Emotional Regulation and Social Support Satisfaction. The current findings both confirm and contradict parts of the discussed literature, but they also call for more study by include all of the elements in accessible variables for future studies to better understand predictability and intricate interactions within them.

Keywords: deliberate self-harm (DSH), non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), hopelessness, resilience, emotional regulation, social support.
