ABSTRACT

This study analyzed the effect of agricultural productivity on Nigeria’s economic growth during the 1991-2022 period. The specific objectives of the study were to examine the effect of agricultural productivity on Nigeria’s economic growth from 1991-2022; examine the contribution of agricultural sector to Nigeria’s economic growth; Investigate the relationship between agricultural productivity and overall economic growth in Nigeria from 1991-2022; make recommendations for policymakers to enhance agricultural productivity and its positive effects on the Nigerian economy.

The statistical package Excel spread sheet was used to compute the data and Microfit was used to analyze the data.

The results from the trend analysis for objective 1 shows that RGDP increases with an increase in crop production, RGDP increases with an increase in livestock production, RGDP increases with increase in fish production and lastly RGDP increases of the country’s economy in correlation with increase in forestry production.

Based on findings, this study recommends Government should provide funds to acquire sophisticated farm tools and increase her budgetary allocation to this sector in a consistent manner because of its importance to the national economy, hoping that with proper monitoring of fund, it would contribute more significantly to the economy of the country.

Government should invest in research with the aim of improving livestock and fish breeds in Nigeria.

The Nigerian government should invest in improved storage infrastructure, support small famers with producer services, and improve rural poor farmers to access tangible and intangible benefits of the government.
