Effects Of Municipal Solid Waste Application On Soil Properties And Crop Qualities in Zaria Urban Area, Northern Nigeria

ABSTRACT

municipal solid waste (MSW) as soil organic input has become a corn Zaria urban farming. This is due to its high nutritive effect on crops'his waste has some negative effects on the quality of soil and cropsrefore examines the effects of municipal soliel vvasfe application on send crop qualities in Zaria urban area norlhern Nigeria. Soil sarnped from eight irrigated farm plots where municipal solid waste is u sec! znemice! fertilizer as soil organic amendment and one plot (the c csrrrr-cnemicet fertilizer is used at two standarcl dept"hs_- 0-19cm (top soi!) cub soil) in two seasons (dry and wet). In aH~ 2""16 soil samples lvere Ie two seasons and determined (using standard laboratory rnefh csperties: physical, chemical, and heavy mefal concentrations (Sa rrcilk density, porosity, moisture content, pH_, organic matter, a vaifas, total nitrogen, exchangeable cations (Ga_, mg_, K and Na), f~xGha'EC base saturation, Fe, co, Mn, Zn, Pb, JV,j ar7d Go). Both total and sl concentrations were determined by tan nery a rrct double acid rneth c. Furthermore, water samples from the irrigafion vvater source in the abani and Galma) were collected and tesfeel Tor heavy metal concEX-Ray Fluorescence (XRF). In eoditicrrr, vegetable crops (cabbttuce, spinach and tomato) from irrigated farm sites were colJed for total eJement concentrations by taI7nery acid method. F~earscoefficient was used to test the levels of significant of the e tes rrrei 0.05 with the use of SPSS 10.00 vetsicrrr. The application of rrrcrrrices in urban irrigation farm lands become vviele spread in the studyt could produce a high quality soil amendment vvifh organic rich rnateJ'epending on the waste characteristics, may leael rc» increase in 17 ea vytrations in both soil and crops. The resulfs obtained varied considility rating of the waste sample and trace estesrrresrrr concentration is hio On the quality of the irrigation water scuurcse», fhe metals are bela vvvelues. MSW Influences soil properties in providing essential n utrieeed and OM for improving other soil properlies_ On the metal c cs rrcseip samples, the status of Cu and Mn fall vvifhin fhe adequate /eveJsf Fe, Zn, Pb and Ni are high. The differences observed in soil propeconcentration in the top and sub soifs as vven as in both dry and I'vet s(plained mainly on the use of urban waste as organic input and on t rrent cycling. With the exception of Zn and /Vi vvrrrcsrr have higher level ,7S in both soils and crops, the results from t-l7is st-lJdy indicate trr a t ntions in soils amended with MSW fall vvith in fhe regulatory quide;able and safe median for vegetables and of her crops produced in tfleng-term implication calls for concern. Purrrresrrrrcrres, increase in land eben waste will continue to grow because of ifs economic and sociaJrtheless, the long-term environmental fafe of heavy metals in b crrrr iemeins uncertain. Therefore, some studies on JA'SVV application in s Dled to ensure the sustainability of vegetable and other food p r crci cn that will be agriculturally and environmentally sound.
