Environmental Education And Students Participation Towards Sustainable Environment Development in Abuja Municipal Area Council

ABSTRACT 

This study "environmental education and students part1_·i, 17ation towards sustainable environmental development in AMAC ", ,/ras aimc. i at determining the level of Environmental Education and Participation amongst students of secondary schools and their contribution toward sustainable environmental development. The specific objectives were to identify students · awareness and sensitivity on environmental issues; identify the subjects r hat incorporate environmental education in students' curricula; to determine student's involvement in activities aimed towards achieving sustainable environmental development and to determine Teachers Vievvs on the inclusion of Environmental Education in school curriculum. In other to act ual ize the aim of this research, directfield survey was conducted using both structured and semistructured questionnaires. A total of 220 questionnaires was administered to the population of interest of which 200 was administered to st uclents and 20 to teachers respectively. The data collected was analyzed using simple percentage and bar graph. The study reveals that the knowledge 0/7(1 application of environmental education amongst secondary school students is very pour owing to the fact that it is not taught as a single subject but rather inculcated into the syllabus of other subjects. The study also found out that the contents of environmental education in school curriculum is not satisjuctory and that inadequate teaching aid is the major challenges of teaching environmental education. Franz the findings, it is recommended that Environmental education should be treated as a single subjects in secondary schools in i'CT and Nigeria in particular, and Provision of adequate teaching aid and necessary materials should be made available to teachers.
