ABSTRACT
Despite the availability of potential land for agriculture and problems of formal
employment in Tanzania, youth are less involved in agriculture. This study aimed at
analysing factors influencing youth disengagement in agricultural activities using
Babati District as a case study. Data was collected from 180 youths from rural and
urban areas using questionnaire and from 16 key informants using a check list. The
collected data was analysed using SPSS computer program to obtain means,
frequency and percentage. The study revealed factors that influence youth
disengagement in agriculture to include limited access to land, credit and capital.
Other factors include lack of adequate training, risks involved and negative
perception towards agriculture.
The study recommends the government to reform and formulate development
policies which are in favor of rural youth participation in agricultural activities. The
policies should ensure secure land tenure, availability of credits and reliable markets
for agriculture produce.
