Abstract
Discrimination is one of the most controversial phenomena to challenge the Human Resources (HR) function in the workplace. Gender issues are such phenomenon in Nigerian society, which has serious implications for both human and national development. Gender discrimination turns the employees emotionally brittle, simple peace loving employees transform into paranoid and suspicious, fearful and angry individuals. Therefore, this study was undertaken to examine gender issues and women advancement to leadership position in First Bank Nig Plc. The study utilized questionnaire as instrument of data collection. It made used of the workers of First Bank Nig Plc. The sample size for the study was six-eight (68) and the sample size was selected through: purposive sampling technique. The quantitative data was analyzed through chi-square. It was revealed in the study that women in leadership positions have created a gender gap that exists not only in banking sector but in many areas of the workplace. Society has determined that only males make good leaders; therefore it continues to deny easy access for women seeking leadership roles because they do not fit the norm. Based on the findings above, it can therefore be inferred that there is a significant relationship between gender issues and women advancement to leadership position and there is a significant relationship between women leadership and organization performance in the banking industry. Also, the development of relevant skills in management was recommended for women, to make them effective leaders and managers
